Volume 16, Issue 2 – February, 2014
Brazilian nights and a wonderful samba lesson warmed a really great night of dancing. An ominous warning of winter storm dampened attendance but not the dance experience. As it turned out, the storm did not begin until well after the dance was over. Phil Motley kept the dance music going in his typically wonder style and Marifay 'Faye' Ico made the samba lesson brisk and exciting.
"Heart to heart" is the theme of our 2014 Valentine's Day dance. February 15 is the big day, with music by Eagle and Pam Lindsey and instruction by Julie Woodridge, who will teach rumba. The lesson will begin at 7:15 p.m. and the main dance at about 8 p.m. Look for some special Valentine's Day highlights to add to the occasion.
Volume 16, Issue 1 – January, 2014
Winter Wonderland was, in fact, a truly winter experience. Undaunted, however, dancers converged at the Walb Student Union and had a wonderful time. Parking was interesting, as several concurrent events on the IPFW campus drew sizable crowds. But despite the heavy snow, the sidewalks were clear as the IPFW maintenance staff worked their magic. The music was truly a joy as Eagle and Pam Lindsey showed their creative genius in the variety of Christmas and holiday tunes that fit ballroom dancing perfectly. The dance was graced with the appearance of seven instructors: Kelli Bartlett, Chris Spaulding, Marife "Faye" Ico, Marcy Haataja, Julie Woodridge, Tony Didier and Danel Michelle Nickels-Didier. The dancing was superb with two ladies' choice dances and a very nice mixer included in the program.
The first dance of 2014 will be January 4, with music by Phil Motley and instruction by Marifay "Faye" Ico, who will teach samba. The lesson will begin at 7:15 p.m. and the main dance at about 8 p.m. The theme will be "Brazilian nights," so think warm and come ready for a great time. Please note that this month's dance is an exception to our chapter's normal practice of hosting dances on the second Saturday of the month.
Volume 15, Issue 12 – December, 2013
What a great time for our fall theme. A romantic rumba lesson started off the delightful evening of light fantastic. Instructor Melissa Culbertson coaxed the large class of dancers from basic to bronze moves. Eagle Lindsey displayed his DJ magic with the music and 101 dancers had a wonderful time. In addition to Melissa Culbertson, instructor Marci Haataja attended with some of her students. So did Jessie Garinger, whose "Jessie Garinger's Dance Page" on the Web is a comprehensive list of dance activity in northern and central Indiana and western Ohio. (Also, be sure to check the "Where to Dance" link at the top of our chapter's home page, www.fwdancesport.org.)
Winter wonderland is the theme and dancing excitement is a good bet. Join us December 14. Our lesson will be foxtrot, led by instructor Kelly Bartlett of Dance Tonight dance studio. The lesson begins at 7:15 p.m. and the regular dance commences at 8 p.m. Music will be provided by Eagle Lindsey. What a wonderful way to end the year with ballroom dancing! See you there.
Volume 15, Issue 11 – November, 2013
Halloween costumes dotted the dancing landscape at the beautiful Walb Memorial Ballroom as 104 dancers delighted to the music of Eagle Lindsey and his wonderful mix of ballroom music to the Halloween theme. The evening began with a fun merengue lesson led by master instructor Dave Cowdrey of Renaissance Dance Studio, who introduced several really neat steps to the enjoyment of the enthusiastic crowd. The largest group of this dance season also enjoyed the presence of instructors Dave Cowdrey and several students from Renaissance; Marci Haatajay and her crew from Auburn; and Hannah Artfitch, the private instructor for a group of homeschooled students from Angola. Hannah lives in Lansing, Michigan but drives to Angola each week to teach (wonderful dedication). We are so grateful she accompanied her students to Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne Dancesport events truly are a great place to mingle with a great variety of dance instructors and their students from the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The dancing is really fun and the people are without exception, wonderful.
Thanksgiving Day is nearly three weeks away, but the leaves have been showing off their golden luster for some time. With our dance theme being "Fall," why not dance those calories away now so that we're all ready to feast to our hearts content (in theory). The dance is Saturday, November 9. A lesson in rumba taught by Melissa Culbertson starts at 7:15 p.m. The main dance, with music by Eagle Lindsey, runs from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Come early and be prepared to dance, dance, dance!
Volume 15, Issue 10 – October, 2013
Wonderful dancing and friendly camaraderie filled beautiful Walb Memorial Ballroom at the September Dance. An even 100 dancers delighted to the music of Phil Motley and thoroughly enjoyed the lesson in country two-step taught by the very talented Chris Spalding of Dance Tonight studio. It was an exciting time with several top instructors strutting their dancing skills and delightfully intermingling with the crowd. Of course Chris Spalding was the star of the show, but we were also pleased to have Marife "Faye" Ico, a genuine crowd pleaser and regular Dancesport instructor. Just back from New York where he auditioned for theatre, dance and singing parts was Tony Didier and Danel Michelle Nickels-Didier, wonderfully talented dance instructors. A Fort Wayne Dancesport event truly is a great place to mingle with a great variety of dance instructors from the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The dancing is really fun and the people are without exception, wonderful.
As Halloween festivities present themselves, the Walb Memorial Ballroom is the place to be for great dancing. The theme will be Halloween and costumes are optional. July dance report
Although activities galore were underway throughout Fort Wayne, 84 dancers enjoyed a wonderful time at our July Dance. Marife "Faye" Ico provided a really delightful Argentine tango lesson. Filling the floor end to end, all members of the group seemed to master the fun-filled lesson. Thanks, Faye. The music by Phil Motley was, as always, a treat enjoyed by all.
August dance will be sock hop
Get ready to roll back the clock on August 10 at Walb Student Union as we sock hop the night away. Don't fret, smooth dance lovers, there will be plenty for all. Marcie Haataja is our guest teacher and east coast swing will be the lesson. Eagle Lindsey will dazzle us with his special touch for music. Hope to see you there, and for goodness sake, bring some friends and we'll have fun, fun, fun 'til someone takes our T-Bird away.
Nightclub two step was the order of the evening at the IPFW Walb Student Union, with 67 dancers enjoying and learning to the lesson by Kelly Bartlett and Chris Spaulding, new owners of the Dance Tonight Fort Wayne studio. An evening of wonderful dancing to the always enjoyable music of Phil Motley rounded out the delightful Fort Wayne Dancesport monthly gathering. Having Kelly and Chris teach a course marks their first time for Fort Wayne Dancesport. We wish them well at their new studio, located at 1515 West Dupont Road (260-437-6825).
Special Olympics takes place July 27, 2013 at the Grand Wayne Center. Dan Keck has issued an urgent request for one male dancer to pair up with one female Olympian. She will not be able to compete without a partner. Please help if you can schedule the time.
What a wonderful evening it was for dancing. May's dance featured 78 dancers and some very special moments. Eagle Lindsey provided a most exciting variety of dance music and Melissa Culbertson made the west coast swing lesson a delight to experience. We are so grateful to have such superior talent making our evening of light fantastic possible. Thank you.
A highlight moment at the dance was provided when Chancellor Jacquay stepped out on the floor in between dances and, on bended knee, offered an engagement ring to Andrea Sarrazine. She accepted, and all dance members offered the dance floor to them for their magic moment dance. Then, with virtual spontaneity, dance members formed a circle around the dance floor to help the young couple celebrate the moment. Lots of smiles lit up the happy moment. How very sweet.
The Fort Wayne Dancesport April dance was very nice, with 91 dancers enjoying the dance world at its best. Dave Cowdrey of Renaissance Dance Studio did a wonderful job of teaching polka steps, keeping it simultaneously interesting, mildly challenging and most of all, fun. Our thanks to Dave for sharing his talent and experience. We always look forward to his lessons.
USA Dance District Three awards were presented during a brief intermission. Audrey Hindle received the 2012 Chapter of the Year Award for our Fort Wayne Dancesport chapter.
