Ever wonder why competitive ballroom dancing is called "dancesport?" Dance Channel TV visited the USA Dance National Dancesport Championships and created the report below. It includes interviews with "Dancing with the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba and USA Dance Dancesport Vice President Ken Richards. The report explains ballroom dance competition and covers the effort to make ballroom dancing part of the Olympics. It also covers social ballroom dance opportunities provided by USA Dance chapters.
You can learn more about dancesport and social ballroom dancing right here in Fort Wayne! Fort Wayne Dancesport is the local chapter for USA Dance and even though “Dancesport” is part of the chapter’s name, the chapter hosts monthly social ballroom dances. These dances are a great way to try ballroom dancing because each dance includes a group lesson. Even if you’ve never danced before, you can learn enough at the group lesson to enjoy the dance.
More information about our social dances, including upcoming dates, is available on our "FWD Events" page.
As for dancesport, the local chapter of USA Dance also provides a chance to see true ballroom dance competition in person right here in Fort Wayne. The chapter hosts the annual Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships which draws excellent amateur couples from all over the Midwest. This year’s competition was combined with the Special Olympics Indiana Championships for Ballroom Dancing. It all happened July 31 and August 1, 2010 at the Grand Wayne Center in downtown Fort Wayne.
